About the Firm

The history of the Charleston County Bar Association is rich and old; it dates back to the 17th Century when Nicholas Trott became the first lawyer to come to Charles Town to practice law in 1699. The association rapidly grew and by 1750, 42 lawyers were a part of the Bar. The Bar also played an instrumental role in the American Revolution and one of the bar members, John Rutledge, was appointed the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1791. Throughout its history, the Charleston County Bar Association has progressed forward using its principles of integrity, open-mindedness, and adoption of change; the first female member was admitted in 1931.

Currently, over 1,600 attorneys hold the prestigious membership of the Charleston County Bar Association. The association has a dual purpose; it serves as a reservoir of knowledge for all its members, and it assists the citizens of its communities in finding a suitable lawyer for their legal problems. A close eye is kept on the legal services provided by all the members so that the highest ethical standards are maintained. By providing knowledge and information through its website and training seminars, the Charleston County Bar Association helps its members in offering prompt, comprehensive, and result-oriented services to their clients.

The Charleston County Bar Association also plays an important role in streamlining the pro bono work done by its members. It screens the clients for income eligibility; a staff attorney of the Bar interviews them before referring their cases to member attorneys interested in doing volunteer work. Hence, low-income people can conveniently contact the Pro Bono Legal Services Program of the Charleston County Bar Association in case of legal trouble; according to the type of their problem, they will be referred to an appropriate member attorney of the Bar.
